To help Beetles connect with beauty-conscious Millennials and promote DIY manicures, we created an AR-powered virtual try-on experience on Amazon. Customers could explore 100+ nail looks, preview them in real time, and shop instantly—turning inspiration into confident, salon-like decisions from home.

I led the interaction design to ensure the AR flow felt natural, shoppable, and visually expressive across devices.

Final Solution Highlights

Background

Beetles Gel Nail Polish wanted to inspire beauty-conscious Millennials to embrace at-home manicures as part of their self-care routine. As a DTC brand on Amazon, they needed a way to build confidence in color selection—something typically limited by the lack of try-on in online shopping.

Challenge

How might we recreate the tactile, visual satisfaction of salon-style nail testing—digitally—while making it easy for users to explore, choose, and purchase Beetles products?

Insight

For beauty shoppers, the decision to buy is often emotional and visual. Without a way to see how colors look on their own hands, many users hesitate. By helping customers "preview" nail designs, we could turn uncertainty into confidence and inspiration into purchase.

Idea & Execution

We created the Beetles Virtual Manicure—an AR-powered try-on tool that lets users explore 100+ curated nail styles, view them directly on their hands, and instantly shop matching kits without leaving the experience.
Built with social sharing in mind, the tool also allows users to capture photos of their virtual manicures and share the experience via direct link or text.

Design Approach and Strategy

To support a seamless try-on-to-purchase journey, I designed a modular user flow that adapts to different entry points, device permissions, and engagement levels. The experience begins from the Beetles Brand Store and guides users through camera access, AR rendering, and interactive nail selection—minimizing friction at each step.
Key flows were built with fallback logic for privacy and permission handling, ensuring users could continue the experience whether using their own hand, a hand model, or opting into photo-based try-on. Shareability and product conversion were integrated as natural endpoints, allowing users to both express and act on their style preferences within the same flow.
This structure supported an evergreen framework—scalable for seasonal updates, product drops, and future virtual try-on innovations.
